A friend of mine said that if you join pay per post program, you’ll likely be hated by google and your search engine rating will drop

It is true, that google seems to drop your pagerank with paid posts… I did have a 2 PR, and dropped down to 0. However, my traffic hasn’t been any less, and my pages often come up on the first page of Google’s search results for many different search terms. I have seen no harm in it, and have made a few extra bucks for very little time spent.
